But if knees bent the other way what would chairs look like?

As you know I get fascinations with certain things and this month it is the humble chair that has caught my eye. Partly because someone said the title of this post to me as a way of breaking the ice at a gallery opening I was at and also because I have been wanting to try my hand at a bit of upcycling for a while now and chairs seemed like a good way to get started with this fascinating artform.

The English Oxford Dictionary defines Upcycling as :

Reuse (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original.

‘the opportunity to upcycle trash, or turn it into new products, was vast’

There are hundreds of thousands of ways to upcycle pieces of furniture.  You can start of with experimenting with staining and painting assembled chairs and try your hand at reupholstering the item in question. I personally feel in love with the idea of using spring, wool or yarn to add an extra element to a completed chair, and once they got the hang of it the kids had a great time winding and winding

But painting and adding fabric are by no means the only way to upcycle something, you can get really creative by taking apart items and reassembling them into chairs or by combining styles in unusual ways to make one of a kind pieces of furniture that no one else will have. Take a look at this video for a list of 100 ideas. I especially liked the bath tub concept but I’m really not sure how comfortable they would actually be to sit on!

Because I have been quite taken with the notion of chairs I took great delight in making chairs out of non-chair items. My camera is on the blink at the moment so all the works below are other peoples but I used them as inspiration for my own projects!

I especially loved this sweet suitcase seat

So yes this started out as chairs but I love the way they all come together to make a great talking point of a bench

Last but by no means least, these barrel chairs are amazing!
